How Quickly Life Repeats Itself

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

For more years than I can remember, this weekend was always one filled with much mixed emotions. The summer as we knew it was coming to a close and the school year was beginning. So many, many pencils, crayons, books, notebooks and of course those famous backpacks were the tools of the trade. How life has changed; backpacks on wheels, laptops, I pods, and don’t forget emailing and texting instead of calling. We all know we have to “go with the flow” and embrace progress and change. It’s what we do to move on. Year after year our children started school with excitement, hope, some nervousness, I’m sure, but with a good degree of confidence for the new school year. Forgive me if I seem over nostalgic but we will begin all over again, as our first grandson starts preschool. Not just any preschool, but the very place where our eldest daughter (as well as our other two children) attended from PK-3 through High School: the Samuel Scheck Hillel Community Day School. On one hand I envy my daughter and son-in-law for all the too many to count experiences they are about to have as they watch their son begin a new chapter in his life. On the other hand, we are so grateful to be able to enjoy this new journey as grandparents and be taken along for this most delicious ride. So if you may indulge me, this is for posterity, in the hopes that one day, our grandson will read this and remember how special he and this day are. Dear Alexander, Be a good boy, and listen to your teachers. Make sure to wash your hands after you go to the bathroom and of course before you eat. Be nice to all the other boys and girls in your class. We know you are going to make lots of friends and learn so many new things in your new school. We promise to come to see you in school whenever Grandparents are invited (and even if they are not.) Be as sweet as you are and most of all don’t forget to give your Mama and Papa a big hug and kiss every time you go into your class. Have a wonderful year in PK-2. Love always, Mima and Pipa

Another Summer Going By Quickly Despite The Heat

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

The season of summer in Florida only seems to linger because of the warm climate we live in. In the throngs of winter everywhere else, we still get to enjoy warmer temperatures while everyone else for the most part around the globe has to endure nasty, cold weather. However, the weather does not dictate for us the lengths of the months, or the school calendar as summer has always traditionally been known as the time kids are out of school. Summer camps both day and sleep-away have filled a large chunk of the time with a couple of weeks extra on either end. Southern schools resume in a week with the Northern schools waiting until after Labor Day. Besides holidays throughout the year and birthday celebrations, it is most natural as we get older to reminisce about our summer experiences throughout our lives. As our children grow older and have families of their own, we listen to them recall their summers as well, while they create new memories with their little ones. So much planning all year long just to insure that perfect summer vacation, camp selection, and for some reason less stressed time period of the year. Summers at the beach, fun times at camp, and lazy days with no homework catch my mind slipping back to wonderful childhood memories. Thoughts about places and people, sounds of summer activities, and tastes of barbecues and ice cream continue the stroll down memory lane. Children and summertime go together like so many clichés one could quote, obviously because of the nature of the season and the playfulness of the child. Summer is a time for more relaxed activities, and even in the work place, for easing up on clothing attire. Everyone wants to be part of the summer experience. Weekends at the beach, last minute outdoor dinners, and a just do what you feel attitude permeates the climate. We all try our best to beat the heat by being as close to any water venue we can or resorting to indoor activities and staying cool in air conditioned arenas. Whatever your fancy, take it all in. Reminisce, enjoy new experiences, and immerse yourself in summer as the time always seems to pass by too quickly year after year no matter how hard you try to hold on.
